  9. This ReadMe file contains late-breaking information and tips on using
  10. VideoLogic's SmartTools for Microsoft Windows 95. For a detailed explanation
  11. of the functions and operations of SmartTools please consult the on-line help.

  13. The SmartTools are a new set of applications designed to allow you to get the 
  14. most out of the powerful capabilities of your GrafixStar graphics card. The
  15. SmartTools give you more control over the appearance and behavior of your 
  16. Windows desktop.

  26. 1. An overview of SmartTools
  27. ============================
  28. 1.1.  SmartTools
  29. ================
  30. SmartTools lets you create toolbars to give you more control and quicker 
  31. access to your Windows applications and documents.
  32.  
  33. With SmartTools you can:
  34.  
  35.     -    Use toolbars for other Smart applications, and customize these toolbars 
  36.         to suit your needs.
  37.  
  38.     -    Create toolbars for other applications, adding buttons for the 
  39.         programs, documents and files you use most.
  40.  
  41.     -    Assign hotkeys for the commands that you use most often.
  42.  
  43. 1.2.  SmartDisplay
  44. ==================
  45. SmartDisplay makes it easier and quicker for you to set up the display 
  46. properties for your monitor.
  47.  
  48. SmartDisplay gives you:
  49.  
  50.     -    A SmartDisplay Wizard, which guides you through a step-by-step 
  51.         procedure that helps you find the ideal display properties for the 
  52.         kind of work you are doing.
  53.  
  54.     -    A SmartDisplay setup procedure for advanced users, which allows you 
  55.         to select the display size, color palette, refresh rate, desktop size, 
  56.         connectivity, monitor alignment and properties for your display.
  57.  
  58. 1.3.  SmartDesktop
  59. ==================
  60. SmartDesktop is an application which controls the appearance and behavior 
  61. of your desktop.
  62.  
  63. With SmartDesktop you can:
  64.  
  65.     -    Use a virtual desktop, where the desktop size is larger than the 
  66.         display size. SmartDesktop controls the way you move around the 
  67.         desktop and reach the off-screen portion of your desktop.
  68.  
  69.     -    Change the display size at the touch of a button, allowing you to zoom 
  70.         in and zoom out while you are working.
  71.  
  72.  
  73. 2. Installation / Deinstallation
  74. ================================
  75. The GrafixStar 600 software for Windows 95 users is supplied on the VideoLogic 
  76. Software Library CD in the folder GS600\Win95. This contains two sub-folders, 
  77. Disk1 and Disk2, which contain the following:
  78.  
  79.     Disk1 -  SmartTools and GrafixStar 600 Driver
  80.     Disk2 -  Disk 2 of the SmartTools installer
  81.  
  82. These folders can be copied to your hard disk, or to 3.5" disks, and installed 
  83. in the same way as from the CD. If you are doing this, remember to use the
  84. path to the files you are using, not the path to the files on the CD shown
  85. below ([drive]:\GS600\Win95).
  86.  
  87. Before installing SmartTools, you must install the latest graphics drivers 
  88. for your GrafixStar card (found in [drive]:\GS600\Win95\Disk1 of the CD). 
  89. This is explained in detail below.
  90.  
  91.  
  92. 2.1.  Installation
  93. ==================
  94.  
  95. 2.1.1.  Installing the GrafixStar 600 Drivers for the first time in Windows 95
  96. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  97.  
  98. 1.  Switch your computer on and start Windows 95.
  99. 2.  Windows 95 will detect that you have a new graphics card and ask you for
  100.     a driver for the new hardware.  Choose the option 'Driver from disk provided 
  101.     by hardware manufacturer'. Click OK.  
  102. 3.  Insert the CD into your system.
  103. 4.  Choose Browse and locate the folder [drive]:\GS600\Win95\Disk1 on the CD,
  104.     choose OK twice, select GrafixStar 600 GrafixMAX from the list and click OK.
  105. 5.  When the GrafixStar files have been copied to your PC, a message will appear 
  106.     asking you to restart Windows. Choose OK.
  107. 6.  Windows 95 will restart and a 'VideoLogic GrafixStar Installation' dialog box
  108.     will appear, allowing you to install SmartTools, DirectVideo which includes
  109.     DirectDraw, or to Cancel the options.  Choose the desired option:-
  110.  
  111.     SmartTools:
  112.     VideoLogic SmartTools installation will be executed on selection of this option.
  113.     Please follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  114.  
  115.     DirectVideo:
  116.     Microsoft DirectDraw v1.0 installation will be executed on selecting this option
  117.     which will install DirectVideo.  In order to utilise this software, the user 
  118.     needs to restart Windows 95.
  119.  
  120. 7.  Open the Display Properties control panel (the quickest way is to click the 
  121.     right mouse button on the Windows desktop and select Properties).
  122. 8.  Select the Settings tab and click on Change Display Type. 
  123. 9.  Make sure that the Monitor Type line contains the name of your monitor.
  124.     If not, choose Change Monitor Type, select your monitor from the list 
  125.     and click OK.

  128. 2.1.2.  Re-installing the GrafixStar drivers
  129. --------------------------------------------
  130. The easiest way to install the GrafixStar Windows 95 software is using the 
  131. Display Properties window:
  132.  
  133.    1.    Insert the CD or disk into your computer.
  134.    2.    Open the Control Panel window. To do this, click Start, point to 
  135.         Settings and click Control Panel.
  136.    3.    Double click on the Display icon to open the Display Properties Window.
  137.     Note: You can go directly to the Display Properties window by clicking 
  138.         on the Windows 95 desktop with the right mouse button and choosing 
  139.         Properties from the menu.
  140.    4.    Choose the Settings page by clicking on the Settings tab. 
  141.    5.    Choose the Change Display Type button.
  142.    6.    Make sure that the Monitor Type line contains the name of your monitor. 
  143.         If not, click the Change button and select the name of your monitor 
  144.         from the list.
  145.    7.    Click on the Change button for the Adapter Type.
  146.    8.    Insert the GrafixStar CD into your computer and choose Have Disk from 
  147.         the Select Device menu. Browse to the folder 
  148.         [drive]:\GS600\win95\disk1.
  149.    9.    Select your GrafixStar card from the list and choose OK.
  150.   10.    When the GrafixStar files have been copied to your PC, the Change 
  151.         Display Type window is displayed again. Choose Close.
  152.   11.    A message appears telling you that you will have to restart Windows 95 
  153.         for the new display type to take effect. Choose OK.
  154.   12.    Windows 95 restarts with the new GrafixStar Windows 95 drivers and will
  155.         allow you to install SmartTools, DirectVideo, or to Cancel these options. 
  156.  
  157. If the GrafixStar drivers have installed correctly and SmartTools have not been 
  158. installed you will find an additional 'Advanced' page in the Display Properties 
  159. Window.
  160.  
  161. You are now ready to install the SmartTools for Windows 95.  
  162.  
  163. Note: If you have re-installed your display drivers and you wish to use 
  164. SmartTools, re-install SmartTools for Windows 95 to allow the correct
  165. system changes to be configured in Windows 95.
  166.  
  167. 2.1.3.  Installing the SmartTools
  168. ---------------------------------
  169.    1.    Choose Run from the Start menu.
  170.    2.    Insert the GrafixStar CD into your computer and browse to the folder 
  171.         [drive]:\GS600\win95\disk1.
  172.    3.    Type setup and choose OK.
  173.    4.    Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  174.  
  175. When SmartTools is installed, the Advanced page within the Display 
  176. Properties Window is replaced by two new pages entitled 'SmartDisplay' 
  177. and 'SmartDesktop'.
  178.  
  179.  
  180. 2.2.  Deinstalling the SmartTools
  181. =================================
  182. To deinstall the SmartTools from your system, rerun the SmartTools SetUp 
  183. from the VideoLogic SmartTools program group and select Remove.
  184.  
  185. Note that removing SmartTools involves restarting Windows 95, so save 
  186. any open documents before you start.
  187.  
  188. Once the SmartTools have been deinstalled, you will have to reinstall the 
  189. GrafixStar drivers so the Advanced page reappears in the Display Properties 
  190. Window.
  191.  
  192. 3. Troubleshooting
  193. ==================
  194.  
  195. 3.1  Display Properties - Settings Tab Corruption
  196. -------------------------------------------------
  197. As part of the SmartTools installation the Settings Tab in the Display Properties
  198. page is modified. It has been found that some other applications may also modify
  199. the Settings Tab, e.g. Direct X version 2. This can result in corruption of the 
  200. Settings Tab.
  201.  
  202. To disable the SmartTools modifications to the Settings Tab use the patch file
  203. (msstnpg.reg) included on disk 2 of the SmartTools install. To do this run the
  204. file MSSTNGPG.REG once from within Windows 95 by double clicking on its
  205. icon. To re-enable the SmartTools modifications to the Settings Tab, SmartTools
  206. must first be deinstalled and then reinstalled.
  207.  
  208. 3.2  Errors when running Virtual Desktops and/or changing Modes
  209. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  210. Some applications, especially those that display video, report errors when running
  211. a Virtual Desktop or changing modes. Every effort is made to prevent such
  212. problems but if they do occur we recommend that you close the problematic 
  213. application before changing mode.
  214.  
  215. Virtual desktop of 1600x1200 with a display of 1280x1024 is not a valid 
  216. combination.  It is possible to achieve this mode by a combination of 
  217. mode changes via 'Smartzoom' with the SmartTools toolbars and with the use of
  218. mode changes with SmartTools 'Advanced' options.  If this occurs choose 
  219. another combination.
  220.  
  221. 3.3  Resizing the Screen
  222. ------------------------
  223. In addition to centering the display, SmartDisplay also enables you to resize the 
  224. viewing area within the monitor. Once the viewing area has been resized
  225. SmartDisplay will remember that setting for future use.
  226.  
  227. Some monitors may react adversely to the viewing area being resized, resulting in
  228. a lesser quality display. We recommend that if you experience slight corruption,
  229. screen juddering or lack of focus that you reduce the refresh rate. To restore
  230. the default settings, simply reinstall the GrafixStar 600 drivers.
  231.  
  232. 3.4.  Modes
  233. ===========
  234. 3.4.1.  16-color modes
  235. ----------------------
  236. SmartTools is not designed to work with a 16-color palette (4-bits per pixel). 
  237. The modes 640x480x16 and 800x600x16 cannot be accessed using SmartTools. If 
  238. you want to use these modes, SmartTools must not be installed. 
  239.  
  240. 3.4.2.  Monitors
  241. ----------------
  242. Windows 95 does not restrict the generic SVGA monitor settings to a given 
  243. set of display sizes, so SmartTools allows any display size to be selected. 
  244. Therefore if you have 'Standard monitor types' selected as your monitor, 
  245. SmartTools will not restrict your display size. There is therefore a 
  246. possibility that you could zoom out to a display size that your monitor does 
  247. not support.

  250. 3.5.  Toolbars
  251. ==============
  252. 3.5.1.  Disappearing Toolbars
  253. -----------------------------
  254. When using SmartDesktop to zoom into the desktop, it is possible from time 
  255. to time to lose sight of the SmartTools toolbars. You can relocate a toolbar 
  256. within your current display using the 'Find Now' feature. To reach the 
  257. 'Find Now' button, select the Properties button of the toolbar on the 
  258. Toolbar Properties page of SmartTools.
  259.  
  260. 3.5.2.  Maximize in Display
  261. ---------------------------
  262. The SmartDesktop feature 'Maximize on Display' maximizes your applications 
  263. to the full size of your display.  However, the Windows 95 taskbar is 
  264. necessarily kept on top of the display as a default, so part of your 
  265. application window disappears below it.  If you use this feature, we 
  266. recommend that you set the Taskbar to 'auto-hide'.
  267.  
  268. 3.5.3.  Moving & Deleting Buttons from Toolbars
  269. -----------------------------------------------
  270. You can move buttons around on the toolbars by holding down the shift key 
  271. and dragging them to the desired location. To remove a button, drag it off 
  272. the toolbar while holding down the shift key.
  273.  
  274. 3.6.  HotKeys
  275. =============
  276. 3.6.1.  DOSBox
  277. --------------
  278. The SmartDesktop hotkeys will not function when a DOSBox is open and its 
  279. window has the focus.
  280.  
  281. 3.7.  Connectivity - Feature Connector
  282. ======================================
  283. 3.7.1  Feature Connector
  284. ------------------------
  285. If you select 'Feature Connector' from the Connectivity page of SmartDisplay, 
  286. your CONFIG.SYS file is modified to include the TSR VLENABLE.SYS. VLENABLE 
  287. is a small utility that enables DAC snooping (i.e. your PC to register the 
  288. appropriate hardware connections) at start up.
  289.  
  290. If your system does not have a CONFIG.SYS file, or it has one that is zero 
  291. bytes in size, you must create a file called CONFIG.SYS at the root of your 
  292. hard disk and make sure that it contains some data (a 'rem' line is 
  293. sufficient), before you select 'Feature Connector'. 
  294.  
  295. When you have selected Feature Connector you must restart your system to run
  296. VLENABLE.
  297.  
  298. If you uncheck the Feature Connector option, the VLENABLE.SYS line in the 
  299. CONFIG.SYS file will be disabled by changing it to a 'rem' line.
  300.  
  301. 4. The GrafixStar 600 Drivers

  330. All other modes display AVI files using software only, which gives poorer 
  331. quality playback. If you want to playback MPEG files without special 
  332. hardware, you can obtain a FREE copy of Xing MPEG Player when you return 
  333. your GrafixStar 600 registration card.

  335. 4.2. Using games with DirectDraw
  336. ================================
  337. GrafixStar 600 display drivers for Windows 95 are compatible with 
  338. DirectDraw. 
  339.  
  340. SmartTools automatically installs DirectDraw. To manually install 
  341. DirectDraw, find the directory REDIST.IHV on disk 2 and run SETUP.EXE, 
  342. after which Windows 95 needs to be restarted. To deinstall DirectDraw 
  343. simply delete the following files:
  344.  
  345.         file        location

  348.         Ddraw16.dll    [drive]:\windows\system

  352. 4.3. Troubleshooting
  353. ====================
  354.  
  355. QuickTime for Windows Version 2.XX.XX
  356. -------------------------------------
  357. If you experience problems when viewing QuickTime movies, run the QuickTime
  358. Control Panel from the Windows 95 Control Panel, and follow the steps below:
  359.  
  360. - Run the QuickTime Control Panel, click the more button and select the 
  361.   Video tab. 
  362.  
  363. - From within the Optimization section, the Draw Method setting will 
  364.   be set to Video Hardware. Change this to Video Driver.
  365.  
  366. - close the QuickTime Control Panel.
  367.  
  368. Windows 95 Screensavers
  369. -----------------------
  370. If you are using 'Mystify your Mind' Windows screensaver with the password 
  371. option enabled, you may see additional lines appear when the password entry 
  372. window is active.  Choose another screensaver if desired.
  373.  
  374. If you are using 'Curves and Colors' in 65k colors, the colors in the lines
  375. will appear incorrect.  Choose another colour depth, or choose another 
  376. screensaver if desired.
  377.  
  378. Play AVI with MS PLUS! pack
  379. ---------------------------
  380. If you are using a display mode which is capable of video acceleration 
  381. (see section 4.1) and have the option 'Show Window contents while dragging' 
  382. enabled, you will see the accelerated video displaced from the video window 
  383. whilst dragging the video window around the desktop.  Disable the 
  384. 'Show Window contents while dragging' on the PLUS page in the display 
  385. properties.
  386.  
  387. Installing Win95 with a GrafixStar 600 card
  388. -------------------------------------------
  389. If you are installing Windows 95 for the first time from MSDOS, Windows 95
  390. auto detection process will Plug'n'Play the GrafixStar 600 as an ET4000 
  391. 'Display adapter' and an 'Other device: PCI VGA-Compatible display adapter'.  
  392. This presents no problems and does not hinder a GrafixStar 600 drivers 
  393. installation.
  394.  
  395. You may want to remove the section 'Other device'.  To do this 
  396. it is advisable to delete both the 'Other devices' and the GrafixStar 600
  397. entry in the 'Display adapter' section.  After this, Windows 95 will
  398. Plug'n'Play the Grafixstar 600 on the next restart to give only a single
  399. entry for the display adapter.
  400.  
  401. Adobe Type Manager
  402. ------------------
  403. If Adobe Type Manager is installed with Windows 95, the GrafixStar 600
  404. performance can be degraded.  
  405.  
  406. To maximize performance, make the following changes to your SYSTEM.INI file:
  407.  
  408.         [Boot]
  409.         ;system.drv=atmsys.drv
  410.         ;atm.system.drv=system.drv
  411.         system.drv=system.drv
  412.         
  413. Harvard Graphics 4.0
  414. --------------------
  415. Running Harvard Graphics 4.0 for Windows in a 24-bit color mode (16.7m colors), 
  416. causes a series or errors.  Please use a 16-bit mode which will provide 65,536 
  417. possible colors.
  418.  
  419. SciTech Display Doctor
  420. ----------------------
  421. During the installation of this utility found on the VideoLogic Software Library CD,
  422. the install needs information regarding supported VESA modes in the BIOS belonging 
  423. to the graphics card.  Once the installation is complete, and you are returned to 
  424. the Windows 95 desktop, you may find that functional icons (ie. minimize, maximize,
  425. close, scroll icons) appear black.  This can be remedied by restarting Windows 95.
  426.  
  427. Dorling Kindersley
  428. ------------------
  429. Problems have been found with two applications produced by this company 
  430. 'The Ultimate Human Body', and 'The Encyclopedia of Science'.  On launching these
  431. applications in 16-bit (65,536 colors) and 24-bit (16.7m colors) resolutions, you 
  432. may find that the window background color is incorrect.
  433.  
  434. In addition, when scrolling the window over the body in the 'The Ultimate Human 
  435. Body', the main window showing the zoomed portion of the selected window may not 
  436. show the complete image.
  437.  
  438. Choosing an 8-bit mode (256 colors) will resolve these problems.
  439.  
  440. Monitor screen centering
  441. ------------------------
  442. Some advanced monitors which utilize a user display setting by detecting the 
  443. horizontal line frequency, may appear to change the size and positioning of the 
  444. returned Window 95 screen when task switching from a DOS fullscreen session to a 
  445. Windows 95 session.  This problem occurs when the monitor is at the borderline 
  446. between two settings.
  447.  
  448. To remedy, use the monitor screen controls to adjust the screen to the desired settings.
  449.  
  450. Quickres
  451. --------
  452. Quickres is part of a series of unsupported utilities provided by Microsoft.  
  453. The mechanism used by Quickres to achieve color-depth switching on the fly can 
  454. seriously impact GrafixStar 700 performance, and can make Windows 95 unstable.  
  455. We do not recommend the use of this utility.
  456.  
  457. 11th Hour
  458. ---------
  459. The 11th Hour game does not ship with drivers which are capable of running 
  460. with the GrafixStar 600.  You can use the supplied drivers provide by SciTech
  461. on the CD called SciTech Display Doctor 5.2 which once installed, allows the
  462. use of a later revision of UniVBE driver which is compatible with the chipset on 
  463. the GrafixStar 600 so that the program can be run.  For continued use of this
  464. driver, please contact SciTech for registering information.
  465.  
  466. Duke Nukem 3D (shareware)
  467. -------------------------
  468. When starting Duke Nukem 3D shareware version, the first screen will show
  469. display corruption.  This will not stop you playing the game but can be
  470. remedied by the use of UniVBE from the SciTech Display Doctor 5.2 as supplied
  471. on the CD, or obtain a software BIOS TSR available from our online services.
  472.  
  473. Jazz Jack Rabbit
  474. ----------------
  475. Jazz Jack Rabbit may suffer from sprite corruption.  This is a unique problem in that we
  476. cannot currently recommend a solution.
